Swampscott Announces the First COVID-19 Death

The Town of Swampscott announced Thursday that a Swampscott resident has died from complications related to COVID-19. This is Swampscott’s first confirmed COVID-19 related death.

“It is heartbreaking to hear this devastating news,” said, Marianne Hartmann, RN, MPH, and Chair of Swampscott Board of Health. “As a community we have all seen news reports of outbreak-related deaths in other neighboring communities and places around the Commonwealth. This Swampscott passing reminds us how essential it is to continue our efforts and work to protect each other during this outbreak. “We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends grieving their loved ones during this difficult time,” said Peter Spellios, Chair of Swampscott’s Select Board. “We urge everyone to continue to be to vigilant with their social distancing, wearing of masks and other measures designed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Our town government will also continue to be vigilant to ensure that we do everything we can to combat this awful virus.”

“We cannot stress enough the need to STAY AT HOME and keep physical distance from each other as we work to protect the health and lives of our loved ones, particularly those at highest risk,” said Sean Fitzgerald, Swampscott’s Town Administrator. “It is so critically important that we follow public health orders and stay home. COVID-19 is a such a serious virus.”

The Swampscott Board of Health and the Swampscott Select Board have established Stay at Home and Face Covering orders to help stem the spread of COVID-19. All Swampscott residents must wear a face covering when entering a store or in any indoor common areas in residential or commercial buildings. “As COVID-19 cases continue to increase in Swampscott, we all need to intensify all measures to help stop the spread of the virus,” said Jeff Vaughan, Swampscott’s Public Health Director.
