Renewable Energy Committee

Mission

The Swampscott Renewable Energy Committee (REC) evaluates and makes recommendations to the Board of Selectmen regarding energy conservation, energy efficiency, and/or conversion to greener energy sources. The REC is dedicated to providing information and guidance to the municipal government as well as residents, property owners, and businesses in Swampscott.

"Making energy a primary factor of investment decisions in Swampscott, by residents, businesses, and the Town."

The decisions we make determine our impact on the environment. Some are small, frequent decisions - should I walk or drive today? - and some are much larger and infrequent. Should our next car be electric? Can we afford to replace our old furnace with electric heat pumps? Residents and business owners face these decisions every day, and the Town makes investment decisions during our annual planning process.

Highlights

  • Municipal Energy Efficiency: As a designated Green Community, Swampscott has received energy efficiency grants from DOER of over $850,000 since 2011
  • Swampscott Community Power: All residents are automatically enrolled in the Swampscott Community Power program, which defaults to 100% renewable energy. For a small additional cost, residents can opt in to get 100% local renewable power from projects in New England.
  • Municipal Solar: Solar arrays generating 450kW of DC power are installed on the high school and middle school roofs
  • Residential Energy Efficiency: In 2021, Swampscott partnered with Revise Energy to increase the uptake of home energy audits and weatherization work. As of Dec 2022, an additional 100 homes were audited and 59 weatherizations implemented.
  • Residential Solar: There are 271 rooftop solar systems in Swampscott, as of August 2021.
  • Electric Vehicles: Three Town EV charging stations are installed at Town Hall and the high school. A successful demonstration of EVs owned by community members was held at Linscott Park in June 2022.
