Swampscott Selected by National Grid for Energy Efficiency Initiative

Town Announces Program to Help Residents Save Over $80,000 Annually

National Grid has selected the Town of Swampscott to participate in its Massachusetts 2016 Community Initiative, which encourages residents to take measures to reduce energy used in their homes. To bolster home energy efficiency in Swampscott, the Renewable Energy Committee (REC) launched a program called Big Blue Energy Initiative in 2012. Swampscott’s participation in the National Grid program will help the REC continue and expand their Big Blue Energy efforts.

The National Grid initiative provides financial incentives to the Town if enough residents implement energy saving measures such as no-cost home energy assessments, air sealing, and insulation. One of the goals within the initiative is for Swampscott residents to complete 268 home energy assessments by the end of 2016. The Town stands to win an award and receive more than $14,000 from National Grid if it achieves all of the initiative’s goals. The National Grid incentives are in addition to state and federal energy efficiency incentives already available to residents.

With the announcement of the National Grid 2016 Community Initiative, the Town is relaunching the highly-successful program that helped Swampscott achieve significant home energy assessments in 2013. The Big Blue Energy Initiative is led by Director of Community Development, Pete Kane, and the Renewable Energy Committee in collaboration with local Mass Save provider, Next Step Living.

Each measure identified in the National Grid initiative reduces the amount of energy used in a home. If residents of Swampscott  implement the measures identified in the National Grid initiative, not only will the Town win the award, but participating residents will save money by reducing the amount of energy they use in their homes.  Next Step Living estimates that if residents participate as indicated in National Grid’s initiative, the savings will exceed $80,000 per year.

Other cities selected by National Grid for the 2016 Community Initiative are Lowell, Melrose, Newton, Quincy, Somerville, and Winchester.
