Town of Swampscott
Hurricane Earl Information
Updated: Thursday, September 2, 2010  8:21PM

First storm effects are expected early on Friday evening, increasing overnight, and beginning to diminish around Two AM. Saturday morning. While currently the most significant impact is expected over Cape Cod and the Islands, Hurricane Earl is a currently a dangerous category 3 storm which bears close watching by all residents as even small track changes can dramatically influence storm effects. Managers from all of the Town’s departments have been meeting for several days and preparations are in place for all potential storm effects. Likewise residents are advised to make common sense preparations. Among these would be to insure that you have battery flashlights and radios available in the event of power loss, make sure that gutters and downspouts are able to divert water away, and raise items in basements to protect from even minor flooding. Secure all outdoor furniture and any other objects which could be blown about by high winds. Most importantly residents should be extremely careful around the oceanfront as dangerous rip currents may be present even after the storm passes on Saturday. Additional storm preparation suggestions can be found at www.mass.gov/mema. More information will be forthcoming if needed. Remember it is always best to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
