Mission Statement

The Building Department interprets and enforces the Massachusetts State Building Code, Architectural Access Code, Plumbing and Gas Code, Massachusetts Electrical Code and the Town of Swampscott Zoning By-Laws in order to insure the public safety. The department also reviews applications and issues permits, conducts field inspections and responds to the request for information and compliance, maintains property records, assists residents, contractors and others, and works with the town departments to help assure consistency, accuracy and access to information.



Inspection requests: All requests for Inspections (Plumbing, Gas, Electrical & Building) are taken through the Building Dept. during business hours. Inspections will be performed within 24 hrs. receipt of request and not later than 48 hrs. thereafter. (Unless specific arrangements are made).

Generally 8am-10am the Building Inspector is available in the office to answer any questions you may have, for comprehensive inquiries for Building and/or Zoning we ask that you schedule an appointment.

Electrical work permit applications:
Town of Swampscott uses the Massachusetts standard application form. All electrical contractors, along with the application form, must submit a copy of their registered electrician license.

Plumbing & Gas work permit applications:
Town of Swampscott uses the Massachusetts standard application form. All Plumbing & Gas contractors, along with the application form, must submit a copy of their registered license.
