Swampscott Historical Commission Mission Statement
In accordance with Massachusetts State Law Chapter 40 Section 8D, the Swampscott Historical Commission identifies, protects and preserves the historical heritage and resources of the Town of Swampscott. To accomplish this mission, the Commission shall perform, but is not limited to, the following:
- Identify, compile, and maintain an inventory of the town's historic assets according to the Massachusetts Historical Commission's guidelines;
- Identify resources for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places;
- Encourage community awareness of and promote interest in Swampscott's historical heritage; educate community about preservation issues and how preservation can positively impact the town's economic development and property values;
- Advocate thoughtful, preservation-minded planning and development in keeping with the character and history of the town and be an active participant in the town planning process;
- Advise and work with Town boards, committees, departments, and administration in all matters relating to historic preservation, including any proposed alteration, destruction, or relocation of historical assets in accordance with Swampscott General Bylaw, Article IX, Section 14, the Preservation of Historically Significant Buildings.
2014 Preservation Award Winners
The Swampscott Historical Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Preservation and Restoration Award. This award was created by the Historical Commission to celebrate outstanding efforts to preserve and restore historic properties that maintain our town’s character and beauty.
These properties include residences and public buildings whose preservation or restoration maintains or is faithful to the original design or style. The following award-winning projects embody the goals of preserving, protecting and celebrating Swampscott’s historic architecture and unique sense of place:
- 85 Monument Ave - Michael and Ellen Garvey (owners)
- 17 Devens Rd - Sydney Pierce and Tim Zimmer (owners)
- 322 Humphrey St - Frances Flaherty and Michael Berardo (owners)
- 130 Atlantic Ave - Charlie and Mary Patsios (owners)
Swampscott residents submitted nominations for projects they believed worthy of this distinction. The Commission hopes that by getting the community involved in this process it increases public awareness of such efforts, and helps emphasize the importance of maintaining historic properties.
This year’s winners received a report detailing the history of the house and neighborhood, list of owners and an in-depth architectural description. They also received the very first historical house plaques available in Swampscott. The Historical Commission will announce the new Historical Plaque program in January whereby owners of historical homes can apply for a plaque for their own home. The recipients were also honored with a reception and public recognition at the November 5 Board of Selectmen meeting.
Calling for Nominations! 2015 Annual Preservation and Restoration Awards
The Historical Commission invites residents to submit nominations for the 2015 Annual Preservation and Restoration Awards. You can nominate yourself, a friend or a neighbor to celebrate their efforts to preserve and restore historic properties that maintain our town’s character and beauty. These properties can include residences, commercial buildings, or other structures whose preservation or restoration maintains or is faithful to the original design or style.
Eligible project categories are restoration, rehabilitation, adaptive use, neighborhood conservation and landscape preservation. Awards are presented in consideration of the following criteria:
- The historical and architectural integrity of the property preserved by the project
- The exceptional quality of the project
- The extent to which the project contributed to the preservation of the property
- The impact of the project on the preservation of the town's historic resources.
