THE MISSION OF THE SWAMPSCOTT COUNCIL ON AGING IS
·       To serve all seniors with dignity and positive regard.
·       To identify and respond to the needs of elders and to advocate on their behalf.
·       To promote an awareness in the community of issues regarding seniors.

WELCOME
The Swampscott Senior Center is located at 89 Burrill St., directly across from the Police Station.

NUTRITION
Meals are served 5 days a week from 11:45am until 12:20pm.  No reservations are required for lunch.  Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors are available.  Presently Greater Lynn Senior Services deliver approximately 50 meals to Swampscott residents.  A 1.50 donation is suggested.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is a very important part of the services offered to Swampscott seniors.  The Council continues to offer transportation to and from the Center for the lunch program for Swampscott residents.  Food shopping and banking take place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  On Fridays, we visit local department stores.

OUTREACH
The Outreach Program offers the senior community the services of a staff person who meets and/or visits with individuals on a confidential basis in order to assess their needs.  Issues regarding transportation, home health care, Meals on Wheels, nursing home and adult day care are just some of the many areas in which information and assistance are available.  In addition, special initiatives such as the Farmers Market Coupon Program, Are You O.K.? the telephone reassurance program, and the new Interfaith Food Pantry are all part of our expanded outreach effort.

S.H.I.N.E.
S.H.I.N.E. (serving health insurance needs of elders).  The Swampscott Senior Center has trained S.H.I.N.E. counselors who regularly visit the facility to provide information on health and insurance needs.  The counselor is on site every Thursday at 11:00am.

TRIAD consists of a partnership that involves senior citizens, law enforcement, and support services.  The primary goals of TRIAD are to reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to this population. Swampscott signed an agreement to form a council in this community on September 29, 2005.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL
One of the most essential services that we offer is that of information and referral.  Many families of elders often find themselves in need of certain types of assistance that we may not be able to directly provide.  It is in these cases that we must be able to refer them to the proper individuals or agencies that can best solve their problems in a timely and efficient manner.

HEALTH PROGRAMS
·       Blood Pressure clinics take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 AM to 12 PM, and   the second Wednesday evening of the month from 6 PM to 8 PM.
·       Town Health Nurse is on site Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8pm
·       Flu Shot clinics are held annually
·       File of Life cards and Are You O.K. applications are available at the center

CAREGIVER SUPPORT
The caregiver support group meets twice a month at the Senior Center and functions as a support activity for those caring for elderly family members and friends who are ailing.  The group is facilitated by a social worker from G.L.S.S.

MEN’S CLUB
A senior men’s club has grown to over 60 members.  The men meet monthly for a luncheon at the Senior Center.  These meetings usually include a speaker who addresses a topic that is relevant to seniors.

VOLUNTEERS OPPORTUNITIES
The Swampscott Senior Center depends on volunteers to keep programs running smoothly.  Many of our volunteers help with the daily lunch program.  If you have a few hours to spare or a special talent, contact the Center for more information.
